Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy

Catching the Dreams of Tomorrow, Preparing Young Women for the 21st Century
Founded in 1996, Delta Academy was created out of a deep sense of urgency to help young girls, ages 11-14, overcome the challenges of academic struggle, low self-esteem, and limited future opportunities. This initiative provides a transformative opportunity for local chapters to enrich the education of young teens and complement their learning in public schools across the nation. Specifically, Delta Academy focuses on strengthening their academic foundation in math, science, and technology, while also fostering leadership skills through service-learning, which emphasizes the importance of cultivating and maintaining meaningful relationships.
The primary goal of Delta Academy is to prepare young girls for active, impactful leadership in the 21st century, ensuring they are equipped to thrive and make a difference in their communities and beyond.
In the San Antonio Alumnae Chapter, Delta Academy takes place monthly on Saturdays. The chapter thoughtfully plans and implements activities tailored to the needs and interests of the young girls in the area. These activities often include computer training, self-esteem workshops, etiquette classes, science-based field trips, and opportunities for college exposure. Additionally, participants enjoy special outings to cultural events, museums, theaters, concerts, and elegant dinners—each designed to broaden their horizons and deepen their understanding of the world around them.
Through these experiences, Delta Academy continues to inspire, uplift, and empower young women to dream big and lead with confidence in the world of tomorrow.
Delta GEMS: Catching the Dreams of Tomorrow, Empowering Young Women Today

As a natural extension of the highly successful Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy, Delta GEMS was created to support and uplift African American adolescent girls, ages 14-18, who are at risk of academic and personal challenges. The Delta GEMS program is designed to help these young women turn their dreams into reality by fostering a "CAN DO" attitude and guiding them through tasks and activities that build confidence, resilience, and self-efficacy. The goals of Delta GEMS are:
1. To inspire academic excellence and a commitment to success.
2. To provide the tools and resources needed to sharpen skills and achieve high levels of academic achievement.
3. To help young women set meaningful goals and create plans for success, both in high school and beyond.
4. To nurture compassionate, community-minded leaders by engaging participants in service-learning and community service opportunities.
Through Delta GEMS, participants gain a clear roadmap for college and career planning, with activities designed to promote self-reflection, personal growth, and empowerment. Like the Delta Academy, the Delta GEMS program is implemented by local chapters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Young women in the program are encouraged to define and “Discover Their Individual Brilliance”, ensuring they are prepared to lead with confidence and purpose in their futures.

Under the direction of the National Social Action Commission, Delta Sigma Theta mobilizes our members, chapters, and national leaders to advocate for the Sorority’s predetermined positions and objectives. The National Social Action Commission was officially established in 1963 to provide information and direction to the membership on current civil rights issues. It traces its roots back to the Vigilance Committee, which was created to strengthen and unify the social action efforts of the Sorority. As a result of these efforts, Delta Sigma Theta has become an integral part of the movement to secure equal political, educational, and economic rights for all Black people.
